How to Deposit a Check
There's more than one way to deposit a check. You can stop into the bank, use and ATM that accepts a deposit, or snap a photo with your phone.
Mobile Deposit
You don't even have to leave the house if your bank has mobile deposit. Sign the back of your check in the designated area and follow the directions in your mobile app. You typically take a picture of the front and back of the check and enter the amount you want to deposit. There may be a maximum amount you can deposit with this method. Your deposit is usually available within one to two business days, but this may vary depending on the time of your deposit and the bank.
The ATM
Most banks will allow you to make a deposit at an ATM (Automated Teller Machine). Check to make sure the ATM is supported by your bank. Sign into the ATM with your card and PIN (Personal Identification Number) and then follow the ATM directions to deposit your signed check. You will get a receipt for your deposit. The funds will typically be available within three business days, but this will vary depending on the time of your deposit and the bank.
Visit the Bank
Most banks will have tellers on hand to make deposits. Sign the back of the check and you can often provide your debit card and PIN to make a deposit. You may also need another form of identification. Your deposit should be available within the first business day after you submit it, but this will vary depending on the time of your deposit and the bank.
Direct Deposit
This hands-off approach is available to specific deposits, such as paychecks or tax returns. You can set this up with your employer if it's available. This puts your paycheck directly into your account on payday. Check with your employer about the process, but you'll need to provide your account information.
How to Fill out a Deposit Slip
You can also fill out a deposit slip that has all the information the teller needs to deposit your check or cash. These are included in the back of your checkbook. You can also sometimes get one at the bank. You’ll need to fill in these sections:
- Date
- Name on the Account
- Bank Account Number and the Routing Number (find this in your online account or on your checks)
- "Currency" or "Cash" section should be filled in if you want to deposit cash
- Fill out the total amount of each check you wish to deposit on separate lines. There are extra spaces on the back of the deposit slip
- Add all the checks and cash together for the subtotal
- Fill out the amount of cash you wish to receive in the "Less Cash Received" section. Leave it blank if you don't want cash back
- Fill in the "total" or "net deposit" section by subtracting the "Less Cash Received" from the subtotal
- Sign your name on the signature line. This may only be necessary if you want cash back
- Give this and the signed checks to the teller
Cashing your first check is a big milestone. A personal banker at First PREMIER Bank is available to answer questions. You can also chat with a digital banker through your online account.
