Build Dakota Scholarships



Full Ride Technical Scholarships that Support Our State

The State of South Dakota has partnered with philanthropist T. Denny Sanford to establish the Build Dakota Workforce initiative. This program grants remarkable scholarship and employment opportunities to deserving students attending eligible technical schools in South Dakota.

  • Eligible to both in-state and out-of-state students
  • Scholars of all ages are welcome to apply
  • Recipients commit to living and working in the state, in their field of study, for three years following graduation
  • Full ride scholarships to eligible South Dakota technical schools



Applicant Eligibility

  • U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
    • Not necessary to be a South Dakota resident
    • Applicants with green card who are eligible for federal financial aid may qualify
  • Completed FAFSA (Federal Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • Demonstrated aptitude through one or more of the following:
    • The National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) or other industry-recognized certifications in the career area
    • Technical, dual or concurrent credit courses taken within career interest area
    • Career & technical education coursework completed in career interest area
    • Work-based learning experiences, internships or work experience in career interest area.
  • Enrolling as a first-time student in a high-need program
    • Previous college or technical institute attendance is acceptable


Student Commitment

In accepting scholarship awards, recipients must agree to:

  • Enroll full-time in a technical institute program determined as a high-need workforce area in South Dakota.
  • Following graduation, work full-time in the field of study in South Dakota for a minimum of three years
